Wall Of Fire
Edwards Cinema
March 13, 2004 - Saturday

We went to go see the Starsky & Hutch movie at a local movie theater. First off I should probably say that the movie was about 2 hours long and we walked about after about an hour. The movie was decent but it kind of seemed that most of the funny parts we've already seen in the trailer. Anyway, back to the photo of the day. I took this shot with my new trusty S400. It was a pretty slow shutter speed so I had to brace myself in my seat and snap a few pics to make sure I get a good solid clear one.

Southern Pacific Engine
MKT Railway in Katy
March 12, 2004 - Friday

On my way back from lunch I saw this large locomotive sitting near the side of the road at idle. I pulled over and snapped a few pictures before I got back to the office. It is amazing how powerful these are. I used a sepia effect on the original image in order to give it an old timey rustic feel.

Stars & Stripes
I-10 Katy Freeway
March 11, 2004 - Thursday

I got my new Canon S400 camera in the mail today and I am very impressed with its compact design. In fact, the picture below is actually my very first shot taken with it. We were on our way to my friend’s poker tournament and we had the great privilege (<<< sarcasm) of being stuck in rush hour traffic. I noticed a large 18 wheeler a few car lengths ahead of me carrying a rather large sailboat. Once I got closer I noticed that the boat was actually a member of the Stars & Stripes Race Team. I’m not too sure on how many boats are actually included in their fleet but they are a very prestigious race team so I reached for my camera and snapped a picture.

Mountain Bikes
Target Superstore
March 10, 2004 - Wednesday

I went to Target to buy a set of new mountain bikes for my parents as a birthday gift to my father. I was very surprised as to how inexpensive mass produced mountain bikes have gotten. This particular red bike was $72.99 and it was complete with fully adjustable front and rear suspension. I know these bikes are no where near the quality of high end market type bikes but I was just surprised as to how much you could get for less than $75. My parents loved them.

Waterfalls
Wood Creek Reserve Subdivision
March 9, 2004 -Tuesday

Today was an awesome day, the weather was perfect. I decided to drive out near the Wood Creek Reserve subdivision and take a few pictures of the man made waterfalls. I just recently learned that my Canon G5 camera has a built in Neutral Density filter which would allow me to slow the shutter speed way down with out over exposing the picture. The slow shutter speed will result in a soft flowing effect on the moving water. Today was the perfect day to get out there and test what I learned.

I had my G5 mounted on my mini tripod and found a nice rock to perch on and snap a few pics. All three of the pics were taken with a shutter speed of 1/4 and a FNumber of 8.0. I actually ordered a couple of external Neutral Density filters and they should be here in the next day or two. I'm hoping to experiment a bit with them as well once they get in.

I would say that my favorite types of picture has to be delayed shutter speed shots. I have a bunch that are set with slow shutter speeds in order to get that motion or blurred look. I guess each photographer has their little niche' and I guess I have found out which one is mine.

St. Martin's Episcopal Church
Uptown Houston
March 8, 2004 - Monday

WOW. What else can I say about this gorgeous gothic style church. This pictures will in now way do the architecture any justice whatsoever. This church had so many interesting angles, archways and walkways I did not know what to shoot first. I do know that once I get my wide angle lens for my camera I definitely have to make it a point to stop back by this church.

NOTE: These images were processed on a poorly calibrated monitor so the image editing that was done is very obvious. These photos will be reworked as soon as possible.

The church was so well lit I had no problem whatsoever with light. Normally I encounter not having enough light for a nighttime shot so this was a definite first for me.

This is a completely new structure, St. Martin's church has been in Houston since the early 1950s and just recently started construction on this new facility a couple of years ago. According to their website, they plan to have their first service Easter Sunday.

This archway caught my eye as soon as I got out of the car. I thought this would make for a very interesting non traditional church photo. Perspective makes all of the difference in the world.

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo
Reliant Stadium
March 7, 2004 - Sunday

The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is the world's largest Rodeo event and lasts about 3 weeks. Each day after the Rodeo events guest performers close out the night with a live concert. There is a ton to do and see from the large carnival outside in the parking lot to the livestock exhibits in the adjacent Reliant Center.

Reliant Stadium is normally home to the Houston Texans NFL team but for these few weeks in March is it transformed into the world's largest Rodeo arena. The natural grass modular football field is completely removed and replaced with clay and dirt for the Rodeo events.

Reliant can seat up to 70,000 people during the Rodeo events and tonight it brought in about 54,000 visitors to see Reba McEntire perform. I'm not really a big Reba fan but it was a cool experience to go watch the rodeo and see all of the exhibits. This picture was actually pretty hard to capture because I was sitting in my seat and I could not possibly use my mini tripod so I had to brace myself and be very still. I think the exposure time was set to something like 2 seconds and it took like 20 pictures in order to be sure that I got a clean crisp image.

Classic Car Meet
Sam's Warehouse Parking Lot
March 6, 2004 - Saturday

As I was driving by a Sam's Warehouse store I noticed that there were a ton of classic muscle cars in the parking. I decided to stop in and walk around and drool over the many cars that were there. This is a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible that was in mint condition and attracted many onlookers including myself.

One main reason for all of the onlookers was because this particular 68 Camaro had a current Corvette LS1 power plant resting nicely in the engine bay. About 35 years worth of technological advancements separate this Camaro SS and its LS1 power plant. It just goes to show that a little new with the old is not a bad thing.
