Another Flower
Our Office Building
April 8, 2004 - Thursday

This is a flower just outside our office building. Today ended up being a very nice day to be outdoors. Once again, this image was taken with my S400. In preparations for our vacation in a couple of weeks I ordered a Muvo2 MP3 player today. This MP3 player has an internal Hitachi 4gb micro drive. After doing some searching around on the internet I realized that this micro drive can be removed from the MP3 player and used in my Canon camera. As of right now, I only have about 768mb total storage and that will not be near enough for a week long vacation.

Sunrise
Katy, Texas
April 7, 2004 - Wednesday

As I drove into work this morning I noticed the sunrise in my rear view mirror. I decided to pull over onto the shoulder right after my exit and take a couple of pictures of it with my S400. I've been using my S400 a lot more here lately so that I can get a little more accustomed to it. Lisa and I are going on a vacation here in a couple of weeks and I am trying to get to the point where I know exactly what to do with this camera in different situations.

Wild Flowers
My House
April 6, 2004 - Tuesday

I brought home a bouquet of flowers to my girlfriend Lisa to help brighten her day a bit. The flowers were very vibrant and impressive if I must say so myself. I decided to get out both of my cameras and shoot a few pictures for my gallery. The first two images are taken with my Canon G5 and I must admit they were shot with some very crude impromptu lighting. I hope one day to get a nice light box in order to help improve the lighting on items such as these flowers.

This image was taken with my little Canon S400. I thought I would try it out on these flowers as well to see how it does. I have been really impressed with the quality that this small camera is capable of.

Wild And Free
Reliant Stadium
April 5, 2004 - Monday

This is actually an image I took yesterday while I was at the car show. The reason I am using it for today's image is solely because of the background of the sculpture pictured. It is called Wild and Free and it was created by Edd Hayes. Hayes is the same sculptor that created the life size statue of The Struggle which portrayed the mythical hero Bellerophon wrangling the Pegasus. That image and story was the subject I took a picture of a couple of days back. O thought it was a weird coincidence that he also made this one as well. This 150 foot long life size sculpture was dedicated to the Houston Livestock Show and rodeo in 1992 for their 60th anniversary. It was moved from its original location which was in front of the now demolished Astro Arena to its current resting spot which sits between the Astrodome and the new Reliant Stadium.

The Auto Show
Reliant Arena
April 4, 2004 - Sunday

Lisa and I went to the Auto Show today and looked at all of the different models of new cars available. There were many very cool designs and some new concept cars. I actually took an average amount of pictures today but for some reason my camera settings were off a bit most turned out to be worthless. The image below is a wheel shot from the new 2005 Chevrolet Corvette C6. The new C6 version has many European and Japanese sports car influences incorporated into the overall exterior design. It is too bad that the overall shots of the car were included in the group of pictures that ended up being trashed.

Another image that survived my photographic mishap today was of the Porsche Cayenne. When I first saw what was under the hood I immediately thought that engine compartments are not suppose to be this sleek and streamlined. I guess I am just used to seeing sub $20,000 car engine bays. This Cayenne's 3.2 liter V6 puts out a nice 247 horsepower that drive all four wheels wherever you want to go. I am just not too sure that I would want to drive a $45,000 luxury sport utility vehicle off road through the woods and such. I'd probably freak out if I accidentally bumped a street curb somewhere much less get it down and dirty on some rough terrain.

U.S.S. Lexington
Corpus Christi, Texas
April 3, 2004 - Saturday

I made a trip to the U.S.S. Lexington Naval Aircraft carrier today only to find out that they had already closed for the day. This ship is flat out huge. I had never been this close to a carrier before and I was very impressed by the sheer size. These pictures do not give the ship its due justice. I was pretty disappointed to find out that the tour closes at 5pm so I will have to add this spot to my agenda on my next trip to Corpus Christi.

After I went out and had dinner I decided to make a trip back by the Lexington to take some night time shots of it. I had noticed the other day on my way back to my hotel room that the ship was very brightly lit so I made a mental note to try to stop by before I head back to Houston. After a little research I found that the ship had been originally commissioned in February of 1943 and served in World War II. The carrier, also know as The Blue Ghost was decommissioned in 1991 and became a museum ship here in Corpus Christi.

As the stories go, the Lexington herself is actually haunted by the ghost of a young naval seaman. A couple of people have mentioned to museum workers about how much they liked the young man in the engine room who answered their questions in great detail about how the ship's engines operated. As it turns out, the young man was not an employee at all and has probably been wandering the ship for many years. He is dressed in a sharp summer white naval uniform and has mainly been seen in the engine room where it is believed he was stationed.

The Corpus Christi Caller, the local city newspaper has a website online devoted to the helpful ghost. The website even has a Ghost Cam setup up in the engine room so that website visitors can peek into the engine room and see if by chance they can see the ghost themselves. Here is The Caller Website and here is the direct link to The Ghost Cam.

Another Day On The Coast
Corpus Christi, Texas
April 2, 2004 - Friday

Today was another clear day here on the coast. I drove along the beach in search of a place to have dinner and I noticed this church a couple of blocks off of Shoreline Blvd. I decided to drive over to it and snap a few pictures. The only thing was that I was pretty hungry so I took this picture while still sitting in my car from the side of the street. I really love how the setting sunlight reflects off of the old mason steeple. I think church pictures are an ongoing, subliminal theme that I have somehow set for my gallery. Churches seem to have a very gothic architecture feel to them and I like how they, old churches in particular, contrast with our modern day structural design.

After dinner I drove around downtown and along the beach doing a little exploring and came across Pier 99. Located just north of downtown, Pier 99 is a very popular restaurant and bar located right on the beach overlooking the U.S.S. Lexington. They have a very nice outdoor patio area which allows you to soak in the sun and have a few drinks while the fresh gulf breeze blows by. Next time I'm in town I plan on making it a point that I stop and have a few drinks here on the beach.

An Evening At The Beach
Corpus Christi, Texas
April 1, 2004 - Thursday

The office that I am working at is actually located in Ingleside which is about a 15 minute drive from Corpus Christi. Once I got off of work today I decided to take the short drive over to Corpus Christi and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beach. I found one spot along Shoreline Drive where there were a bunch of people windsurfing and even kite surfing. It was very interesting watching the kite surfers but they were often out of range for pictures. It was very impressive watching these guys fly up and down the coastline.

I drove to Indian Point Park just in time to catch the sunset. I took a few shots here but then sought out for a spot on the other side of the bridge in order to try to get some unobstructed photos.

After driving through a bunch of construction zones I finally found the access road which led me to the bay. There were a few people there fishing and seemed to have been catching quite a bit. Cloud cover started to accumulate along the horizon which kind of killed my chances of getting some nice vibrant colors in the sky as the sun began to set. This image was taken form a low angle capturing a portion of an old existing piling that was right on the shoreline.
